Which weather radar is the most accurate? ›

The WSR-88D is one of the most powerful and advanced Weather Surveillance Doppler Radar in the world. Since first being built and tested in 1988, it has been installed and used operationally at over 160 locations across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

However, what we see on the radar could be falling but not reaching us when it hits the ground. This is called virga. Virga is rain that evaporates before it hits us here on the ground. It could be raining a mile up in the atmosphere but that rain evaporates as it falls down through drier air.

TDWR attenuation problems

This attenuation means that the radar cannot "see" very far through heavy rain. It is often the case that a TDWR will completely miss seeing tornado signatures when there is heavy rain falling between the radar and the tornado. Hail causes even more trouble.
