You can also make jars as gifts or part of a DIY gift basket for Christmas, Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, etc. The possibilities are endless!

Although I know you can buy cookie butter (paid link) in the store, to be honest, I always prefer homemade. And this homemade cookie butter is so easy. If you are into cookie butter, you will definitely love this. If this is the first time for you, once you taste this cookie butter, you will be hooked!

This recipe is not only delicious but also so easy to make! It’s perfect for any occasion, from Christmas cookies with the kids to a dessert for a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day.

Seriously, just like any other cookie butter, this homemade cookie butter can be used as a spread, dip, filling, and for baked goods, too. Oh, yes, and you can enjoy it by spoonfuls, too! (don’t ask how I know that…)

I have even used this homemade cookie butter recipe for the filling in these Cookie Butter Macarons!

Making Homemade Cookie Butter

The easiest way to make homemade cookie butter is by using a food processor (paid link). It will crush the cookies and make them into fine powder form in just a few seconds. If you don’t have a food processor, you can place the cookies in a plastic bag and pound them with a rolling pin (paid link) until they are pulverized into a fine powder.

You can use any cookie to make your cookie butter. I have used chocolate chip, sugar cookie, gingersnap and others. Of course, your favorite cookie is the best choice. Just make sure the cookies don’t have a soft filling. But if your favorite cookie does have a soft filling, just scrape the filling out.

This cookie butter recipe creates a creamy, buttery mixture. If you decide to use milk instead of heavy cream, the consistency of the final product will not change, but it will take a little bit longer to blend with the other ingredients.

The addition of vanilla and cinnamon (paid links) creates better flavor. But if the cinnamon doesn’t appeal to you, then just leave it out. Adding a pinch of salt can also enhance the flavor.

If you like your cookie butter to be sweeter, then add more sugar. Just keep in mind that the cookies are already sweet. Adding a bit of brown sugar (paid links) will give your cookie butter a hint of maple flavor. So, plan out what you want your homemade cookie butter to taste like before calling it “done”.

Ingredients to Make Cookie Butter

  • 2 cups crushed sugar cookies
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (but not hot)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or granulated sugar (optional)
  • a pinch of salt

Instructions to Make Cookie Butter

  1. Grind the cookies in a food processor, or put them in a plastic bag and pound with a rolling pin, until they are a fine powder. If you didn’t use a food processor, pour the ground cookies into a medium-sized bowl.
  2. Add the sugar, vanilla, cream, butter, cinnamon, and salt, and process for another 2 minutes, or use a hand-mixer on low speed.
  3. Add a little more cream, if necessary, until you have reached the desired consistency (like peanut butter).
  4. Transfer the cookie butter to a lidded jar.
  5. Serve or refrigerate.

Enjoy!

To Store: Cookie butter can be stored in the refrigerator and can last up to two weeks. But, in my experience, it will be gone and won’t even reach a week.
