FFORT BEND COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE2+ weeks agoAgencyThe number and frequency of fraudulent phone calls to Fort Bend County residents made by persons illegally seeking personal information and creating a sense of urgency so that you will pay money, have increased. As a precaution, please take the following steps to protect yourself from persons who want your personal information to commit identity fraud or to compel you to pay money to them: 1. Activate caller ID and spam protection on your phone so that you have an idea who the caller is. 2. Caller ID is an announcement you can activate to hear the caller before you answer. 3. Scammers will try to create urgency for you to pay money and may impersonate a family member or someone you know. Be careful and cautious if pressure or urgency is made for you to give to a social cause, a charity, or recent natural disaster. Through artificial intelligence, some scammers are able to impersonate the voice of a family member or friend to convince you to pay money. 4. Links or websites texted to your phone may exploit your personal information and lead to theft. 5. Apps or files texted to your phone from an unknown caller may intend to steal your information. 6. Be wary of one-call scams that serve to peak your curiosity so that you are charged a fee when you return the call. If you do not recognize a number, you are not compelled to answer. Some legitimate callers will leave a message so that you can return their call at your convenience. 7. Mark unknown and unauthorized calls as spam so that you are not defrauded. 8. A call blocking app may be able to assist with identifying illegal robocalls, scam calls, or other suspicious calls. You are given a choice on answering these calls. 9. Calls made to inform you that you won a prize are illegitimate if they require you first to pay a fee. 10. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office will not call you to collect money due for a fine or warrant, to post bail for an inmate, or to cover any costs of an emergency. Taking these precautions may protect your identity from theft and prevent offenders from stealing money from you. #FraudTips #Awareness #FBCSO69Like27

FFORT BEND COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE2+ weeks agoAgencyThink you know what the top scam of 2023 was? Take a guess By Larissa Bungo Senior Attorney February 9, 2024 Every day people report to the FTC the scams they spot. Every year, the FTC shares the information we collect in a data book which tells a story about the top scams people tell us about – so we can all spot and avoid them. The Data Book tells us that people lost $10 billion to scams in 2023. That’s $1 billion more than 2022 and the highest ever in reported losses to the FTC – even though the number of reports (2.6 million) was about the same as last year. One in four people reported losing money to scams, with a median loss of $500 per person. And email was the #1 contact method for scammers this year, especially when scammers pretended to be a business or government agency to steal money. Here are other takeaways for 2023: Imposter scams. Imposter scams remained the top fraud category, with reported losses of $2.7 billion. These scams include people pretending to be your bank’s fraud department, the government, a relative in distress, a well-known business, or a technical support expert. Investment scams. While investment-related scams were the fourth most-reported fraud category, losses in this category grew. People reported median losses of $7.7K – up from $5K in 2022. Social media scams. Scams starting on social media accounted for the highest total losses at $1.4 billion – an increase of 250 million from 2022. But scams that started by a phone call caused the highest per-person loss ($1,480 average loss). Payment methods. How did scammers prefer that people pay? With bank transfers and payments, which accounted for the highest losses ($1.86 billion). Cryptocurrency is a close second ($1.41 billion reported in losses). Losses by age. Of people who reported their age, younger adults (20-29) reported losing money more often than older adults (70+). However, when older adults lost money, they lost the most.18Like

FFORT BEND COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE2+ weeks agoAgencyFort Bend County Sheriff's deputies arrested Samatha Renee Morris, 51, for operating a boarding house without a permit. On February 23, 2024, at approximately 6:45 am, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office responded to the 13700 block of New Village Lane, Sugar Land, Fort Bend County, Texas, regarding a call about an aggressive loose dog in the area. Upon making location, deputies encountered individuals inside a residence requesting law enforcement assistance. During their investigation, deputies discovered 9 individuals inside the residence with obvious signs of neglect and possible injuries, 5 of which were transported to medical facilities for further evaluation and treatment. The owner / operator of the group home, Samatha Renee Morris, 51, later arrived on scene and was placed in custody by a Fire Marshal Investigator. She was transported to the Fort Bend County Jail where she was booked for Operating a Boarding House Without a Permit. This remains an active investigation. The Fire Marshal's Office and the FBCSO are both working a parallel investigation. The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the operation of the group home without a permit and the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation regarding the neglect and/or possible injuries to the group home residents. "The operation of a group home without a permit is not just a violation of the law; it's a betrayal of trust, neglecting the well-being of residents who deserve safety, care, and dignity" says Sheriff Eric fa*gan. "We will ensure that those responsible face the consequences for compromising the welfare of vulnerable individuals."96Like37
